Did you know?

  • The average person takes over 20,000 breath a day
  • 9 in 10 choking incident happens in the home environment
  • 40% of unintentional injuries in infants under 1 year old is caused by choking or suffocating

Choking is something that can happen to anyone at anytime. If it happens to you or someone near you, the key is to react quickly and to not panic. We know it sounds easier said than done, but what will make a difference is for you to learn what needs to be done. Being familiar with the Heimlich Maneuver, and learning the proper protocol to follow to help someone in distress, will give you the confidence to take action swiftly and decisively if there is no one else qualified in the vicinity.

Today being the Heimlich Maneuver Day, we would like to share with you a poster created by St John Ambulance outlining the use of this life saving technique. They also offer training in over 100 locations across Canada.

Chances are that you also have trained first aid responders at your workplace (it’s the law once a company reaches a certain size), their names is often displayed in the company’s emergency protocols guidelines. Go ask trained staff questions, or volunteer to be a first responder. Your company will pay for your training.

We hope you never find yourself needing to step up, but in case you have to, we hope you’ll be prepare and make a difference to avoid a tragic outcome! #HeimlichManeuverDay
